Description
Delightful homemade donuts with rich buttery dough and a fluffy texture, perfect for any occasion.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
- 1/2 cup whole milk, warmed
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 2 large eggs
- Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)
- Powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar for coating
Instructions
- Combine the warmed milk and sugar in a small bowl. Sprinkle the yeast on top and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until bubbly and frothy.
- Whisk together the flour, salt, and nutmeg in a large bowl. Create a well in the center and add the yeast mixture, melted butter, and eggs. Mix until a soft dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes, until it becomes smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place until it doubles in size, about 60-90 minutes.
- Punch the dough down to release the air. Roll it out to about 1/2 inch thick, then cut out donut shapes using a donut cutter. Place them on a floured baking sheet to rise for another 30 minutes.
- Heat the oil in a deep pot or fryer to 350°F (175°C).
- Drop the donuts into the hot oil, cooking until golden brown on both sides, about 1-2 minutes per side. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
- Toss the warm donuts in powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar to coat.
Notes
Don’t rush the rising process; it’s key to achieving fluffy donuts. Feel free to customize your donuts with various glazes or fillings!
