Description

A delightful cake that magically transforms into three layers: a light sponge, rich custard, and creamy base, perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
  • 2 cups milk, lukewarm
  • 1 and 1/4 cups (150 g) powdered sugar
  • 4 eggs, separated
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 cup (115 g) flour
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 325°F (160°C) and lightly grease an 8×8 inch baking dish.
  2. In a clean bowl, separate egg whites and yolks. Whip egg whites until stiff peaks form.
  3. Beat egg yolks with powdered sugar until pale yellow.
  4. Mix in the melted butter and water until combined.
  5. Gently mix in the flour, followed by the lukewarm milk and vanilla extract until smooth.
  6. Fold in the whipped egg whites, one-third at a time, being careful not to deflate.
  7. Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish and bake for 40 to 60 minutes until the center is just barely jiggly.
  8. Allow the cake to cool completely before dusting with powdered sugar.

Notes

Serve warm or chilled with powdered sugar, berries, whipped cream, or sauce. Store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
