Delightful Vanilla Custard Cream Squares with fluffy layers of vanilla custard and flaky pastry, ideal for any gathering.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 sheet frozen puff pastry (thawed)
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 2 large egg yolks
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 1 cup heavy whipping cream
- Powdered sugar (for dusting, optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Roll out the thawed puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface and cut it into squares. Place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Bake the pastry squares for 15-18 minutes until golden brown and puffed. Let them cool completely.
- In a medium saucepan, whisk together the whole milk, granulated sugar, and cornstarch over medium heat. Add the egg yolks, whisking until thickened (about 5-7 minutes). Stir in the vanilla extract and let it cool slightly.
- In a separate bowl, beat the heavy whipping cream until soft peaks form.
- Once the pastry squares have cooled, cut them in half horizontally. Spoon the custard onto the bottom half and top with whipped cream before placing the top half back on.
- Dust with powdered sugar if desired.
Notes
These squares are best enjoyed within 1-2 days for optimal texture. Customize with fruit preserves or different flavored whipped cream.
