Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup softened butter
  • ¼ cup melted butter (for basting)
  • 1 ¼ cups buttermilk (divided)
  • 1 large egg

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a large baking sheet.
  2. Whisk together the flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt in a large mixing bowl.
  3. Add the softened butter, 1 cup of buttermilk, and the egg to the dry mixture.
  4. Mix until a shaggy dough forms, then turn it out onto a lightly floured work surface.
  5. Knead the dough briefly, about 8-10 times, until smooth.
  6. Shape the dough into a round loaf and place it on the prepared baking sheet.
  7. Brush the loaf with the melted butter and remaining buttermilk mixture.
  8. Make a deep ‘X’ cut into the top of the loaf with a sharp knife.
  9. Bake for 45 minutes, brushing with buttermilk mixture every 15 minutes.
  10. Check doneness by inserting a toothpick into the center and listening for a hollow sound when tapped.

Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, or freeze for longer preservation.
