- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 4 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ cup softened butter
- ¼ cup melted butter (for basting)
- 1 ¼ cups buttermilk (divided)
- 1 large egg
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a large baking sheet.
- Whisk together the flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt in a large mixing bowl.
- Add the softened butter, 1 cup of buttermilk, and the egg to the dry mixture.
- Mix until a shaggy dough forms, then turn it out onto a lightly floured work surface.
- Knead the dough briefly, about 8-10 times, until smooth.
- Shape the dough into a round loaf and place it on the prepared baking sheet.
- Brush the loaf with the melted butter and remaining buttermilk mixture.
- Make a deep ‘X’ cut into the top of the loaf with a sharp knife.
- Bake for 45 minutes, brushing with buttermilk mixture every 15 minutes.
- Check doneness by inserting a toothpick into the center and listening for a hollow sound when tapped.
Notes
Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, or freeze for longer preservation.
