Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 and 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 and 3/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • Chocolate buttercream for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk until smooth.
  4. Add eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix until well combined.
  5. Carefully stir in the boiling water.
  6. Divide the batter evenly between the two prepared cake pans.
  7. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, checking with a toothpick for doneness.
  8. Let cakes cool in pans for 10 minutes, then remove and cool completely on a wire rack.
  9. Frost with chocolate buttercream after cooling.

Notes

Use high-quality cocoa powder for better flavor and don’t skip the boiling water for moistness.
