Description

A rich and velvety chocolate custard cake that combines layers of chocolate cake, creamy custard, and luscious ganache, perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 and 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 and 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 2 cups milk (for custard)
  • 1/2 cup sugar (for custard)
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 4 large egg yolks
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for custard)
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 8 ounces semi-sweet chocolate, chopped

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth.
  4. Stir in the boiling water carefully.
  5. Divide the batter into the prepared pans.
  6. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Meanwhile, make the custard by combining milk, sugar, and cornstarch in a saucepan over medium heat until thick.
  8. Whisk together egg yolks and add to the saucepan, cooking for 2-3 minutes before removing from heat and adding vanilla extract.
  9. Allow the cakes to cool for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks.
  10. Assemble the cake by placing one layer on a plate, spreading custard, and topping with the second layer.
  11. Make the ganache by heating the cream, then pouring it over the chopped chocolate, stirring until smooth.
  12. Drizzle ganache over the assembled cake and let set before serving.

Notes

Serve with fresh berries, whipped cream, or ice cream for a delightful treat.
